After being caught obliterating our six year long relationship, I guess all she had left in her arsenal was spite. And she exercised it. Exercised it after I threw her out, when she came to get all of her stuff. She did things like taking her plant pots from around the house, but leaving me the soil.

The empty house was a boon though in the next few weeks – there were no reminders. Still, I spent the first few red-eyed nights wide awake at my friends house.

It was days later, when I was finally back home to compile a list of things I needed to restock, that I saw that she’d even taken a half-used toilet roll from its holder in the bathroom. Which holder itself just sat gleaming serenely in the bright morning sun, a perfectly bitter-sweet and cathartic still-life for me to paint.

But anyway her mother was right about my ex: all it took was time. And now she’s just somebody that I used to know.
